Artist Statement
The majority of my work is hyper realistic animal portraiture. I illustrate animals I’m interested in, usually wild animals. This decision to create work portraying animals stems from my love for drawing them as a child. Although this interest in wild animals has driven a vast majority of my compositions, I am also working on more personal work. These narratives include manipulation and disassociation. Making work about personal subject matter has become a way of expressing my emotions and my experiences. As I continue my college career, my current work has been majorly study based. This includes studies on portraiture, color theory and composition. Creating work that’s study based has allowed me to enhance my work by giving me a better understanding of the technical side of my art.
With the imagery in my work being mainly wild animals, some of the animals I have worked with are reptiles and birds, as I enjoy illustrating the details in their scales and feathers. My other works include self portraits, still life’s, and landscapes. The mediums I use go hand in hand with achieving important details in my compositions. For many pieces I’ve used acrylic paint but I have recently started using oil paint instead. Oil paint has become my main medium as it doesn’t dry as fast as acrylic and I can still layer and achieve desired details. Other mediums I have made work with have been graphite and pen, for much of the same reason that I can achieve extreme detail with them. Overall, I express details in my work to achieve hyper realistic portraiture of animals that I find interesting and I employ these mediums to push this intention further.
